Courses @ Netherhall School

Coronavirus Update

Cambridgeshire Fencing Club is currently looking to re-open slowly, following the Coronavirus lockdown.  Unfortunately this means that we are not in a position to offer Beginners Courses at the current time.  If the club re-opening goes according to plan, we will be looking to restart the Beginners Course in January 2021.

If you are interested in a fencing course or taster session (details below) and would like to be kept updated about our future plans, please contact enquiries@camfc.org.uk.

Fencing Courses at CFC

Cambridge Fencing Club runs a wide range of courses, from those just looking to start fencing to those coming back to fencing after a long break.  All courses take place at Netherhall School, Queen Edith’s Way, Cambridge, CB1 8NN.

Typically we run 10 week Beginners Courses 3 times a year: a New Year course, an Easter course and an Autumn course. Before each of these courses we run Taster Sessions, for those who want to give it a go to those who would like to ‘try-before-you-buy’.  Other taster sessions or short courses can be arranged, dependent on demand.

We also run Intermediate Group Sessions and do have an ongoing an Intermediate Course.  These are aimed at those who were recently beginners or former fencers who haven’t fenced for a while, would like to brush up on their skills and get back into fencing.

For more details about these sessions and the 2021 course please contact enquiries@camfc.org.uk.

Taster Session

Date of Next Taster Session: Proposed Date – January 2021

Registration is currently CLOSED – please contact enquiries@camfc.org.uk if you would like confirmation of date of next course.

When open, register online here: http://entries.cambsfa.org.uk. (use the drop-down menu to select the date, you don’t need a membership number)

Designed for those wanting to ‘give it a go’ or considering a full Beginners Course, The Taster Session will give you an introduction into some of the basics of fencing (the ‘en guard’ stance, fencing steps and simple attacks) before giving you an opportunity to fence for real.  Test your skills against other participants!  Full kit provided.

The session is taught by a group of experienced, qualified fencing coaches. All of the fencing equipment will be provided.  We try to keep the exertion at a reasonable level and concentrate on fencing technique so people with various levels of fitness can enjoy the classes.  At the end of each lesson there will be opportunity to put what you have learnt into practise by fencing fellow beginners.

What you need to bring

Please bring clean sports shoes and comfortable clothing which covers your legs. You’ll need to be able to freely move and stretch your legs so tracksuit trousers are best. Shorts or skirts should not be worn. You might want to bring a bottle of water.

The cost of the Taster Session is £10. This will be reimbursed if you join the subsequent Beginners Course.

Please email enquiries@camfc.org.uk if you have any further questions or issues with registering.

Beginners Course

Next Beginners Course starts: Proposed Date – Late January 2021

Registration is currently CLOSED – please contact enquiries@camfc.org.uk if you would like confirmation of date and registration.

The Beginners Course Runs for 10 weeks on Thursday nights from 8:00pm-9:00pm.  The course is geared towards adults (16+) and we have had participants of all ages from 16 – late 60’s. Younger children should contact the Cambridge Sword, linked at the top of this page.

The course is structured in a way to take you from no fencing experience at all to the ability to conduct a proper fencing match. A general warm-up and stretching session is followed by fencing footwork, technical partner exercises and an opportunity for free fencing.

The course costs £99 or £89 for U18s.  For this you will receive 10 lessons, use of club kit and 4 months club membership, so there will be an opportunity after the course to fence with regular club members in a trial period, take an Intermediates Course and see whether you want to become a full member.  You can also use this time to try out the different weapons (epeé and sabre).

All sessions and courses are taught by a group of experienced, qualified fencing coaches. All fencing equipment will be provided.  We try to keep the exertion at a reasonable level and concentrate on fencing technique so people with various levels of fitness can enjoy the classes.  At the end of each lesson there will be opportunity to put what you have learnt into practise by fencing fellow beginners.
